Clarke County Historical Association

A National Register Historical Landmark and one of the oldest, most original operational grist mills in the country located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. This water-powered grist mill was built in 1782 in an area that would become the quaint village of Millwood. 

The Burwell-Morgan Mill…come marvel at the unusual and immense interior water wheel..come see, feel, and listen to the power of the turning wooden gears, shafts, bins, and old millstones, while the dedicated miller explains the process of grinding wheat and corn just as it was done over 200 years ago. Freshly ground flour, corn meal , and grits are available for sale at the mill.

Experience Everyday Live in Colonial America

Ever wanted to experience every day life in the 1700s? Those who love history and are looking for a beautiful place to visit on a fall day won’t want to miss Heritage Day at the Burwell-Morgan Mill!  The event offers fascinating demonstrations on how people in the colonial era did fundamental activities such as food production (milling wheat and corn), woodworking, hands-on sewing demonstrations, and cooking. There are also kids’ games, fresh apple and pear cider, and an encampment of Revolutionary War re-enactors from the Second Virginia Regiment. All activities are inside and outside of the Mill.

Heritage Day usually falls on the first Saturday in November, so dress warmly, wear sturdy shoes, and bring your friends and family for a fun day in Millwood!

Art from local artists for sale in a unique, historic setting!

Twice a year, the Burwell-Morgan Mill becomes an extraordinary art gallery. Art at the Mill has become one of the premier art shows in the mid-Atlantic region, attracting artists and buyers from more than a dozen states.

During each show, around 300 artists display more than 1,000 pieces of art of all descriptions and media. Oil paintings are predominant, but other types of painting, mixed-media, sculpture, fine woodworking, and pottery round out the stunning diversity of the show. There is truly something for every taste, budget, and decor.

After you're done shopping, we suggest you grab a delicious lunch at Locke Modern Country Store across the street and have a picnic in our meadow. Fine art, history, and food in a lovely setting make this a perfect destination for anyone.

Hands–on activities that include blacksmithing, craft making, games, and a scavenger hunt.  Kids can also learn about the history of the Mill and watch grain grinding in action.

The Burwell-Morgan Mill still continues to grind grain the same way it was ground in the 18th century.  A large, 20 foot water wheel powers two french buhr stones that have been in use since 1866 which grind the grain. The grain we grind on the weekends include soft wheat, hard wheat, pancake mix, white corn, Indian corn, red corn, yellow corn, blue corn, 9-grain, barley, rye, and buckwheat.  Two pound bags of ground grain available for purchase.  Be sure to take some yummy cornmeal or flour home!

In 1818 the Lexington Arsenal was created in Lexington, Virginia to store weapons intended for use by the state militia. In 1839 the Virginia Military Institute was founded as the first state-supported military college in the nation. Small at first, the institute grew and is currently home to approximately 1,700 cadets. VMI offers four year undergraduate degree programs in liberal arts, science, engineering, and social sciences requiring its students to maintain an academically and physically rigorous schedule that is intended to prepare them for roles as citizen soldiers.
