Morven Park

Morven Park is a 1,000 acre historic estate located at Leesburg, Virginia. Morven Park is home to three museums, including the Davis Mansion, the Winmill Carriage Museum, and the Museum of Hounds & Hunting of North America. All three museums are included in your admission cost, so you can explore all the history Morven Park has to offer!

Take a tour of the historic Davis Mansion

In its 240-year history, Morven Park’s mansion transformed from a modest fieldstone house into the impressive Greek Revival building we see today. 

From 1903 – 1942, the mansion was home to Westmoreland and Marguerite Davis. The Davis furnishings, which include 16th-century Belgian tapestries, Spanish cassones, hundreds of silver pieces, Hudson River Valley paintings, and Asian treasures, remain on display throughout the mansion. 

Tours of the mansion lead guests through the fully furnished 1st and 2nd-floor rooms while sharing stories of the Davises’ social and civic lives during the first half of the 20th century. Other rooms reveal stories of the employees who were responsible for the daily work necessary to keep the estate running. 

There are no ropes or barriers within the mansion museum rooms and visitors of all ages and abilities are welcome. Tours run at the top of each hour and last approximately 45 minutes.

The Davis Mansion

Explore a wide variety of antique horse-drawn vehicles from the early 1800s through the 1920s.

The peak of carriage use came about in the last half of the 19th Century. Carriages were once an expensive pastime afforded only by the wealthy class. The industrial revolution led to an increase in the use of machines for carriage making which significantly reduced the cost to build and own a carriage. As a result, the number and variety of carriages quickly grew and carriages were soon a part of everyday life. The different types of carriages created provide a window into the past – the activities, living conditions, social norms, and customs.  

This exhibit explores the use of carriages in city and country settings. A majority of the 40 plus carriages in the museum were donated by collector Viola Winmill in 1969 and have since served to educate about the past. 

The forty antique coaches, carriages, sleds and carts range from utilitarian to regal. Carriages in the country and city held many of the same characteristics – some designed for work and others for recreation, but they differed in their design. Country carriages were durable vehicles, while city versions often exhibited refined qualities that would never withstand a rural road. 

A self-guided tour provides visitors with the opportunity to explore these vehicles from a bygone era at their own pace. Admission to the Winmill Carriage Museum is included with the purchase of a Davis Mansion tour ticket.

The Museum of Hounds & Hunting of North America

In honor of Morven Park’s equestrian heritage, and the Davises' love of foxhunting, the Museum of Hounds & Hunting of North America is located in three rooms of the Davis Mansion.

The museum preserves the art, artifacts, and memorabilia of foxhunting’s rich history. 

The hunting collection is under the ownership of the Museum of Hounds & hunting of North America, but visitors can view the collection inside the Davis Mansion. The Museum of Hounds & Hunting is free of charge and available to visitors as a self-guided experience during regular museum operating hours.

In 1818 the Lexington Arsenal was created in Lexington, Virginia to store weapons intended for use by the state militia. In 1839 the Virginia Military Institute was founded as the first state-supported military college in the nation. Small at first, the institute grew and is currently home to approximately 1,700 cadets. VMI offers four year undergraduate degree programs in liberal arts, science, engineering, and social sciences requiring its students to maintain an academically and physically rigorous schedule that is intended to prepare them for roles as citizen soldiers.

George C. Marshall: He won the war. He won the peace. Learn about the man known as World War II's "Organizer of Victory," and Nobel Peace Prize winner for the Marshall Plan. Marshall is the Virginia Military Institute's most famous graduate (Class of 1901) and its only five-star general. 

The independent, non-profit George C. Marshall Foundation preserves and perpetuates Marshall's legacy through the George C. Marshall Museum & Library and offers a wide range of programming and resources for use by the general public, amateur historians, scholars and students of all ages. We are located on the Parade Ground at VMI.

A National Register Historical Landmark and one of the oldest, most original operational grist mills in the country located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. This water-powered grist mill was built in 1782 in an area that would become the quaint village of Millwood. 

The Burwell-Morgan Mill…come marvel at the unusual and immense interior water wheel..come see, feel, and listen to the power of the turning wooden gears, shafts, bins, and old millstones, while the dedicated miller explains the process of grinding wheat and corn just as it was done over 200 years ago. Freshly ground flour, corn meal , and grits are available for sale at the mill.
