Investigate the legacy of of George Mason through activities and ideas for the whole family.

George Mason played a critical role in the development of American rights. Now, Gunston Hall invites visitors to explore his ideas, weigh his choices, and discover his actions through our newest exhibition, Revolutionary Rights. 

This exhibition, located in our newly refurbished Visitor Center, features activities and opportunities for discovery for guests of all ages. Learn how Mason built off the work of others and developed his own ideas about fundamental rights. Print a broadside with the rights you think are most important, or discover how different individuals experienced Mason's ideas. Explore his decision to deny freedom to enslaved workers while he created a bedrock of American liberty. Consider how your actions and choices expand upon Mason's work.

However you choose to explore, Revolutionary Rights will help you understand George Mason, the origins of American rights, and the power of ideas, choices, and actions.

Revolutionary Rights

No matter your age or interests, Gunston Hall has something for you. Take a tour of George Mason's historic home, hike scenic trails to the Potomac River, or have a picnic on the grounds.  Attend a special event, or just enjoy a special day with family and friends.  

Gunston Hall is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Guided tours occur daily, from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

April through October: tours are every 30 minutes.
November through March: tours are every 60 minutes.
The visitor center and the historic area are open until 5 p.m.
The grounds close at 6 p.m.

Gunston Hall's historic one-acre riverside garden opens Summer 2020.

After decades of researching and planning, we’re restoring the one-acre site to its 18th-century appearance. The Masons left only a few records about the garden.  We have supplemented that knowledge with evidence from our archaeological investigations, plant lists from other 18th-century gardens, and period garden manuals in our rare book collection.

The new garden includes:

• A window revealing part of the original 18th-century pathway in the center of the garden
• New, stable pathways throughout that follow the original layout 
• Heirloom decorative and vegetable plants that were familiar to George Mason
• A large, 18th-century-style fence that links the mansion to the garden – just as it did during Mason’s life.

In 1818 the Lexington Arsenal was created in Lexington, Virginia to store weapons intended for use by the state militia. In 1839 the Virginia Military Institute was founded as the first state-supported military college in the nation. Small at first, the institute grew and is currently home to approximately 1,700 cadets. VMI offers four year undergraduate degree programs in liberal arts, science, engineering, and social sciences requiring its students to maintain an academically and physically rigorous schedule that is intended to prepare them for roles as citizen soldiers.

George C. Marshall: He won the war. He won the peace. Learn about the man known as World War II's "Organizer of Victory," and Nobel Peace Prize winner for the Marshall Plan. Marshall is the Virginia Military Institute's most famous graduate (Class of 1901) and its only five-star general. 

The independent, non-profit George C. Marshall Foundation preserves and perpetuates Marshall's legacy through the George C. Marshall Museum & Library and offers a wide range of programming and resources for use by the general public, amateur historians, scholars and students of all ages. We are located on the Parade Ground at VMI.

A National Register Historical Landmark and one of the oldest, most original operational grist mills in the country located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. This water-powered grist mill was built in 1782 in an area that would become the quaint village of Millwood. 

The Burwell-Morgan Mill…come marvel at the unusual and immense interior water wheel..come see, feel, and listen to the power of the turning wooden gears, shafts, bins, and old millstones, while the dedicated miller explains the process of grinding wheat and corn just as it was done over 200 years ago. Freshly ground flour, corn meal , and grits are available for sale at the mill.
